The Weather Continues To Stink But...

Well here it is Jan 23rd 2015 and a winter storm is looming here in Maryland. Snow accumulations won't be too bad but it just sets us back another week of detecting. But even if the snow melts quickly, the ground will still be frozen and hard break through. Lets face it, for us dirt diggers this isn't our favorite time of the year. But all is not lost.

Despite the weather, all you detectorists out there should be using this time wisely. You should be planning ahead for when the ground is good. I personally like to take this time of year to do research on new land I intend to hunt. For us relic hunters, its a matter of finding those areas with cellar holes, old abandoned home sites etc. and knocking on doors to get permission. In the morning and if the weather permits, I'm actually heading out to an area that has an old homestead that I discovered a couple of years ago. I haven't detected there yet but I'm hoping to find it again and take some pictures and return home to look at Google Earth imagery to get a true perspective of the area and maybe identify some other areas that may be worth looking at when I return in the spring.

For all you Civil War hunters (me included), this is the time where we are researching where battles, skirmishes, and encampments would have taken place. There is nothing like digging up a bullet that hasn't seen the sun in over 150 years. To me they are priceless and worth a lot more than an old coin except for gold coins! I still haven't come across an gold coin yet but when I do I'll let you know. If you Civil War folks love finding the artifacts, you need to check out Aquachigger on YouTube. The stuff he finds is amazing and he finds a lot of it. I've been inspired by this guy.

So don't get depressed because the weather isn't cooperating. There are plenty of things to do. Plan ahead, find new ground, and get permission. If you need something else to do then check out my channel on YouTube for my crazy stupid videos.

Spring will be here before you know it! I promise.
